Kydonitsa

Kydonitsa is a white wine grape variety of unknown origin with main cultivation center Prefecture of Lakonia. There are two hypotheses regarding its origin: it was either transferred from Crete (province of Kydonia) or from Kydonies of Asia Minor. The name of the variety can be attributed either to the region of origin or to the aroma of the must, the color and the texture of the skin, which refer to the quince. Kydonitsa is not mentioned neither in the ampelography of Viala and Vermorel nor do they exist ampelographic descriptions and synonyms. The cultivation of Kydonitsa is recommended for Prefectures of Argolida, Lakonia and it is allowed in the viticultural area of Cyclades.
